Poway, CA, March 17, 2010 – Re-engineered for proven functionality in extended temperature applications, Kontron today announced the expansion of its industrial temperature Computer-on-Module “by-design” product line with the new Kontron ETXexpress®-PC-XT. The new Basic form factor COM Express™ Type 2 module, which is a sister product to the commercial-grade Kontron ETXexpress®-PC module that features the 45 nm Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor and Intel® GS45 chipset, has been redesigned using only components that will be functional under industrial temperature E2 range requirements from -40 to +85 °C. The Kontron ETXexpress®-PC-XT meets growing customer demand for embedded computing solutions that provide high reliability in extreme environmental operating conditions that can range from very high to very low temperatures typically experienced in a military-aerospace, transportation and outdoor signage applications.

Enabling companies to reduce time-to-market with a COTS solution, this true industrial-grade “by design” module eliminates the risk of a failed system in the field and is an optimal alternative to screening commercial-grade products. Customers also alleviate the investment in 100% screening needed in commercial-grade modules with a “by design” product. For critical system applications that have constant or repeated exposure to extreme temperatures or temperature fluctuations, Kontron ensures that all ETXexpress®-PC-XT components are fully industrial temperature rated and are vendor-confirmed to withstand temperatures from -40°C to +85°C. Advantech Delivers 6 and 12 Core ATCA Blades based on the Intel(r) Xeon(r) Processor 5600 Series

The MIC-5320 and MIC-5322 AdvancedTCA Blades with 10GbE connectivity combine single or dual processor computing performance with high-speed I/O flexibility in power efficient designs for Network Equipment Providers (NEPs). Several Tier-1 NEPs have been developing and deploying both blades since 2009 and will now be able to drop in the new processor to these existing designs with minimal to no impact on application software. These Intel® Xeon® processor 5600 series CPUs, based on Intel's latest 32nm process technology, are pin-compatible with the Intel® Xeon® processor 5500 series. They allow OEMs to add higher performance platforms to their offerings or migrate to the new 6-core devices.

The new processors bring significant improvements in core density, performance and power consumption, as well as adding new instructions to accelerate encryption and reinforce security. With up to 6-core operation (up to 12 threads per socket with Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology), 12 MB of shared cache, and support for lower voltage DDR3L DIMMs, the capabilities of the new processors will facilitate further blade consolidation, liberating slots for additional blades without increasing the power budget.

The latest CPUs include Intel® AES New Instructions (Intel® AES-NI) that help free up valuable processor cycles for more virtualization and application processing. Intel® AES-NI consolidates sequences of existing instructions to improve performance of specific math operations, and accelerates the performance of AES applications. Launched at the recent Embedded World exhibition in Nuremberg (Germany), Geensoft was created by a management buy-out (MBO) of the former embedded design tools business of Geensys. The funds raised from Ouest Ventures, the amount of which is undisclosed, will be used as working capital for the ongoing development of the company and its products on an international level. The investment gives Ouest Ventures a 25% stake in Geensoft. The controlling 75% stake in the company remains with the management and employees of Geensoft.

The MBO creating Geensoft was led by former Geensys executives Eliane Fourgeau, Thierry Gueguen and Marc Frouin. APRO launches BON Series ruggedised PATA SSDs with Fast Erase

Evatronix Optimizes its I2S Audio Interface Controller by Adding TDM Support and Single Channel Operation

It is compatible with the Philips I2S specification and all its modes; however, it reduces the number of supported channels from eight to one and introduces the Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) mechanism for more efficient multi-channel handling.

“Most consumer devices are able to send or receive data from one audio channel at a time, and the ability to process 8 channels simultaneously was often excessive,” said Pawel Duc, I2S engineer at Evatronix. “With the introduction of the TDM we’re extending this one stereophonic channel into an orchestra of 16 channels, capable of delivering 192 kHz samples each. High Performance Miniature Thermoelectric Coolers for LD applications in HHL packages

Among all modern tendencies for miniaturization in semiconductor laser and optoelectronics applications, there is an area where relatively large solutions and high-power solutions are required. High-power solid-state CW lasers widely used in medical and industrial applications. High output LD power requires the improved thermal management. For applications with LD output power of 2W and higher there is a typical packaging solution based on HHL package. HHL (High Heat Load) packages were designed to provide optimal LD thermal management for high-power applications. This is the largest industrial standard package available. Windowed and fibered HHL packages are typical as a standard packaging solution for solid-state laser pumping in medical and industrial application areas like: materials processing, medical and dental therapeutics, graphic arts, eye-safe applications and others.

Laser diode inside HHL requires an appropriate temperature stabilization. The integrated thermoelectric cooler (Peltier element) is a typical solution for such applications. However, most of standard thermoelectric coolers, that are suitable for installing in HHL package, have 10-15W of max cooling capacity. Meanwhile modern semiconductor lasers output power is growing by manufacturers achievements, and the amount of heat to be dissipated grows as well. When it is required to dissipate for instance 20-30W, typical thermoelectric coolers are not suitable. Most of standard solutions with enough cooling capacity for it have 30x30mm or larger dimensions, they are not suitable for integrating in HHL package. In this case manufacturers apply external solutions for temperature stabilization like water cooling or air fans. But such solutions have limits for temperature regulating speed, size, power consumption and max cooling temperature level achieved.

Now the solutions with miniature high performance integrated thermoelectric cooling are available. The key feature is in high-performance thermoelectric coolers with high cooling capacity, which are suitable for HHL package applications by size. TEC Microsystems provides three groups of high-performance TECs for HHL package applications available: standard, enhanced and extreme. Standard solutions are based on 1MC06-126-xx and 1MC06-142-xx RMT types. for example, 1MC06-126-05 type has 28W of cooling capacity with 16x16mm2 only size. 1MC06-142-05 has elongated 12x24mm2 shape with 31W of max cooling capacity.

For applications with voltage limits of power supply there are alternate TE coolers with the same dimensions and cooling capacity, but another Imax/Umax combination from MX06 Series. If to compare with 1MC06 TECs, voltage value is reduced twice.

The enchanted solutions are based on standard 1MC06 TECs with reduced pellet height. Pellet is the BiTe element inside thermoelectric cooler. The reducing of pellet height increases the cooling capacity of thermoelectric cooler. The result of pellet increasing for 1MC06 TECs is about 60% higher cooling capacity. Thus, the max cooling capacity of 12x24mm2 1MC06-142-03 is 50W - significantly more than any typical solution, available on the market with such or similar size.

The increased cooling capacity allows to use thermoelectric coolers in that high-power LD applications, where it was not possible before, because of consumer TECs Qmax limit. Also large cooling capacity reserve allows TEC to operate with more optimal C.O.P. With the increased cooling capacity it is possible to get TEC C.O.P close or even higher than 1, which means that TEC electrical power consumption is less than pumped heat value.

Finally, the extreme cooling solution is available, based on two enhanced 1MC06-142-03 TEC installed in HHL package and connected in serial. 1MC06-142-03 type has 12x24mm dimensions. Two of them can be installed in HHL and form the operating area of 24x24mm. And the summary max cooling capacity is 100W - extreme value for lasers in HHL package.

The appropriate heatsink is required anyway to spread the pumped heat from HHL header - thermoelectric cooler operates as a heat pump. The advantage of high-performance thermoelectric coolers for LD in HHL packages is in possibility to pump large heat amounts with better C.O.P., fast and effective temperature regulating, higher cooling temperature level to achieve and expanded temperature ranges in operating mode.

Previously, industrial monitors were only available in 10.4" and 15" sizes. With the launch of IPR-1704O/IPS-1704O, Caltron provides large touch screen capability capable of handling difficult environments for industrial, medical, or outdoor retail systems.

Most engineers today rely heavily on statistical methods such as traditional Monte Carlo analysis for design reliability, an approach that has limitations making accurate analysis almost impossible. Tekton: Fast, Accurate, High-Capacity Static Timing Analysis

Designed to more efficiently handle on-chip-variation (OCV), composite current source (CCS) models and crosstalk analysis, Tekton overcomes the speed, capacity and accuracy limitations of traditional static timing analysis (STA) tools. It brings a new level of performance to static timing analysis and extraction while maintaining complete flow compatibility with existing STA tools.

Tekton meets the runtime, capacity and accuracy requirements for sign-off through an architecture designed to accommodate more than 100 million instances and greater than 15 PVT corners. Traditional STA solutions often take hours or days and numerous machines to deliver results on complicated designs that have many analysis scenarios. Tekton's multi-threaded architecture provides near-linear scaling on up to 24 CPUs. QCP: New Full-Chip Extractor

Coupling Tekton's timing analysis with QCP's extraction in a single session allows designers to simultaneously iterate through the timing closure process of analyzing, fixing and extracting nets. Tekton Multi-Mode/Multi-Corner Analysis Speeds Turnaround Times and Reduces Costs

Performing multi-mode/multi-corner or multi-scenario analysis using traditional tools is time consuming, expensive and cumbersome. Design teams are often forced to purchase many expensive servers and accompanying software licenses to parallelize the multi-scenario analysis in order to shorten run times. In some cases, design teams resort to using abstracted timing models to accelerate the analysis, but at the expense of accuracy. Tekton performs extremely fast, multi-scenario analysis on a single machine and provides the accuracy of existing sign-off solutions. Renesas Technology Announces 100MHz 32-bit RX62T Flash MCUs, Enabling the Design of Control Systems for Electric Motors and Inverters that are More Energy-efficient

SAN JOSE, Calif. ─ March 9, 2010 ─ Renesas Technology America, Inc., today announced the release of the RX62T group of microcontrollers (MCU). The new devices have strong eco-features and deliver the environmental performance now in high demand for motor-control and inverter-control applications. These 100MHz, feature-rich MCUs with no-wait flash memory illustrate how Renesas is using the goals of its corporate ‘Green Energy Initiative’ to drive chip design in eco-friendly directions. The RX62T devices allow manufacturers of embedded systems to better address the increased importance that buyers of products such as consumer, industrial and HVAC equipment give to energy efficiency. Primary applications span a wide range: solar inverters, air conditioners, washing machines, lighting controllers and power-factor controllers, among many others.

This announcement closely follows the launch of two other RX600 groups: the RX62N and RX621 MCUs, which feature enhanced connectivity capabilities. All of these devices feature the RX CPU that powers next-generation 32-bit MCUs and integrates the functions of Renesas Technology’s existing 16-bit and 32-bit MCU chips. Besides the fast speed, high performance, and low power consumption that characterize all RX chips, the RX62T MCUs offer the improved motor/inverter control timers and enhanced analog peripheral functions essential for implementing more precise control capabilities and providing value-added features in embedded system designs that are more power efficient.

Controlling three motors simultaneously with one MCU

For example, RX62T MCUs include MTU3 multifunction timer-pulse units, specialized for motor control, which can drive up to two 3-phase motors. The MCUs also integrate a newly developed 16-bit general-purpose PWM timer (GPT) capable of driving a 3-phase motor. With this combination of timers, one RX62T MCU can control up to three 3-phase motors simultaneously. The timers use the same clock as the MCU, which is capable of 100MHz, enabling the timers to produce a wide range of PWM output waveforms with 10 ns resolution.

The floating-point unit (FPU) and improved analog functions built into RX62T MCUs make these devices ideal for use with three-shunt or single-shunt vector-type motor control methods, while also making the chips easier to use. The single-precision FPU offloads the RX CPU and simplifies decimal-point calculations, boosting overall processing performance and simplifying firmware development. There are two 12-bit A/D converter units and one 10-bit A/D converter unit that can capture analog input values from up to 20 channels at a minimum conversion time of 1 us. Each of the A/D units can be triggered by timer units and can sample three phases in parallel.

The 12-bit A/D includes three programmable gain amplifiers and three window comparators. This eliminates external operational amplifiers and comparators used for overcurrent and overvoltage protection. Elimination of these external components reduces system cost and simplifies PCB layout.

Achieving high performance without being limited by flash technology

The MCUs in the RX62T group provide scalable memory solutions from 64KB flash to 256KB flash, and with up to 16KB RAM embedded. An additional independent 8KB of data-flash memory with a background operation (BGO) function is included, allowing data to be written at the same time a program is executing.

The embedded flash memory is based on the renowned Renesas MONOS (Metal Oxide Nitride Oxide Silicon) technology that can be accessed at 100MHz without wait-state insertion. This fast memory, combined with the RX’s Harvard-type architecture, enables the MCUs to deliver 1.65 DMIPS/MHz at any CPU frequency up to 100MHz, without any limitation from flash technology. Despite this excellent level of processing performance, all devices in the RX62T group achieve very low power consumption: only 0.5mA/MHz in full active mode with all peripherals operating. Packages for the new MCUs include 64-pin, 80-pin, 100-pin and 112-pin LQFPs.

To help customers shorten the development cycles of new embedded systems, RX62T MCUs provide a JTAG debugger interface that allows connections to the Renesas E1 and E20 on-chip debuggers and also enables access to similar JTAG third-party debugging products. Moreover, Renesas, third-party suppliers and a global network of alliance partners support RX MCUs with a large, diverse range of hardware and software development tools.

Elma Bustronic announces 2-Slot VPX test backplane

Elma Bustronic Corporation, an industry leading designer and manufacturer of high performance backplanes, now offers a 2-slot test backplane for VPX board developers and integrators.

The Elma Bustronic 2-slot test backplane is designed to the latest VITA 46 specifications. The backplane allows the user to power up and test their J1 fabric connections as they would be interconnected in the target application. Signals can be passed from one slot to the next via high speed interconnecting cables, via signals introduced through the J1 fabric connector, or accessed on the J1 fabric connector using the test backplane’s SMA and SATA cable headers. The test backplane accepts 6U cards with the 3U size supported by use of a shelf divider. For convenience in attaching probes, the slot pitch is an extra wide 1.6”.

The VPX Test Backplane solves a signal access issue with VPX systems that utilize Rear Transition Module (RTM) boards. VPX cards are usually developed together with an RTM module that does not access the J1 fabric signals. In conventional designs, an engineer cannot probe these J1 fabric signals while using the Device Under Test’s (DUT) RTM module to access other IO signals. The Bustronic solution allows the primary J1 fabric signals to be accessed/connected without interfering with the use of an existing RTM module designed for J2-J6 IO connector signals. Further, custom backplanes are often required to interconnect the primary fabric signals between multiple VPX blades for a specific application. The VPX Test Backplane allows the user to interconnect two or more such blades before investing the time or expense of a custom VPX backplane.

Additional 2-slot Test Backplanes can be used in a larger chassis to interconnect the J1 primary fabric in any serial topology desired. The A channel input using SMA cables accepts up to 10 Gbps and the B, C, and D channel inputs using the SATA II connectors accept up to 3.125 Gbps. There are 8 power studs for VS1, VS2_A, VS2_B, VS3, and 4 GND as well as fastons for 3.3V, +/- 12V, and VBAT. There are also two 5-pin IPMB headers for SMB-0 and SMB-1.

Carbon Unveils New Generation of ARM Models with Availability of Mali Models

Carbon Design Systems™, the leading supplier of tools for the automatic creation, validation and deployment of system-level models, announced today immediate availability of virtual models for ARM® Mali™ Graphic Processor Units (GPUs).

“Our new Mali models represent the first in a new generation of ARM models from Carbon,” says Tom Rathje, Carbon’s vice president of engineering. “The built-in TLM-2.0 interface gives each model the flexibility for architectural exploration, firmware development and application software development.”

These new models, including the Mali-200 and Mali-400MP, are compiled directly from the ARM register transfer level (RTL) code and are 100% implementation accurate.

Each contains transaction level model (TLM)-2.0 interfaces to execute seamlessly with Fast Models from ARM as part of a system prototype and quickly boot an operating system such as Linux or Android. The interface and dynamic clock generation logic automatically turn the model on when it is being used and off when it is dormant. As a result, models run in a loosely timed (LT) level environment without slowing it down, except when they’re active. This capability will enable the same model to be used for architectural exploration, firmware development and application software development.

Mali models also contain a cycle-accurate TLM interface and integrate directly into Carbon SoC Designer and any SystemC or RTL design environment.

The Future has Begun: MEN's First CompactPCI(r) Serial SBC G20

Fast Serial Data Transfer with Future Safety

The G20 is MEN's first 64-bit CompactPCI® Serial single-board computer (PICMG CPCI-S.0, proposed standard currently under development). CompactPCI® Serial is based on CompactPCI® (PICMG 2.0), but supports fast serial data transfer. Thanks to this higher speed, the board is perfectly suited for applications requiring a high computing power, for example in transportation, industrial automation or power generation.

Thanks to the new, extremely fast 64-bit Intel® Core™ i7 processor, the G20 reaches a base frequency of 2.53 GHz. In addition, the processor supports the Intel® Turbo Boost technology, which enables a maximum turbo frequency of 3.2 GHz dependent on the workload.

The G20 offers a total of 8 PCI Express® lines for fast communication. In addition, the board has an excellent graphics performance which can be accessed via two DisplayPorts at the front of the G20. These are well suited for infotainment applications and can also be used as HDMI or DVI ports using external adapters. Two PCIe®-driven Gigabit Ethernet and two USB 2.0 interfaces are also available on the board front.

Thanks to the new CompactPCI® Serial standard the board offers a multitude of serial interfaces via rear I/O. 8 USB, 6 SATA, a Display or HDMI port (instead of one port at the front), 5 PCI Express® x1, a PEG x8 and a PEG x4 port are provided for the user's applications.

The G20 is equipped with a new fast 8 GB DDR3 ECC SDRAM which is soldered against shock and vibration. A CompactFlash® and a microSD™ card slot connected via one USB interface can be used for extending the memory capacity.

Different watchdogs for monitoring the processor and board temperature complete the functionality of the G20, which is shipped with board support packages for Windows® and Linux. The InsydeH2O™ EFI BIOS has especially been developed for Embedded applications. Equipped with special components of the Intel® Embedded Line, the G20 has a guaranteed minimum availability of 7 years.

Robust Design for Harsh Environments

The robust design of the G20 makes it particularly well suited for applications in harsh environments. Possible ranges of application are monitoring, control, measurement and test systems. CompactPCI® Serial PICMG CPCI-S.0 is a new independent base standard (proposed standard currently under development). This standard introduces a completely new connector, which enables a much higher signal density and supports even higher transmission frequencies of 12 Gb/s and more. CompactPCI® Serial is consistently based on the mechanics of CompactPCI® (PICMG 2.0), so it remains 100% compatible to IEC 1101. Geensoft, the specialist independent provider of software design tools and associated professional services for embedded systems development, has launched Reqtify 2010, a major new version of its award-winning tool suite for the automated management of embedded hardware and software requirements capture, traceability and impact analysis throughout the entire development lifecycle. Reqtify 2010 delivers improved productivity through an extensive range of new and enhanced plug-in tools, features and interfaces.

Reqtify 2010 includes new Collaborative Project Management and Reviewer plug-in tools. It enables project managers to consolidate all projects and sub-projects into one global Reqtify project, with automatic linkage of design artifacts to the original requirements. Links management is critical to requirements traceability and Reqtify 2010 now provides the ability to automatically highlight suspect links that have to be validated as soon as changes occur to covered requirements. A new Links Detail View has also been included where engineers can create, edit and analyse traceability and dependencies between project artifacts. It is also possible to define links as either traceability or dependency links so that the required coverage calculation is obtained. A completely reworked Management View enables engineers to easily check project progress and metrics using visual indicators for traceability achievements, requirement errors and quality. Rules Management has also been significantly improved with a new rules management cockpit that enables existing rules to be enabled/disabled using a simple check list and new rules to be created using a simple, intuitive rules editor. A new XML-based tester enables pre-analysis of data to be undertaken prior to the allocation of specific document types to analysis reports. Filters can now be defined with variable values instead of having to define separate filters for each value.

Reqtify 2010 also includes a range of new and enhanced interfaces. A new Eclipse CDT interface and tagger overcomes a major hole in Eclipse Workbench enabling requirements traceability to be easily added to the C/C++ code generated using the CDT capability. The IBM-Rational DOORS interface has also been upgraded to include Full Hierarchy analysis which can be used when there is no clear definition of Sections and Requirements. The interface for HP Quality Center has also been significantly enhanced to include support for Version 10. Improvements have also been made to the Microsoft Office suite and to Sparx Enterprise Architect interfaces.

Taipei, Taiwan – 8th March 2010. APRO, Taiwan’s leading manufacturer of industrial-grade NAND Flash storage devices, has launched the BON Series of high capacity and high performance Serial ATA II (SATA II) Solid State Drives (SSDs) in a ruggedised 2.5 inch form factor.

The BON Series includes the highest capacity SATA II SLC (single level cell) NAND Flash SSD available today at 256 GBytes and also the highest capacity SATA II MLC (multi-level cell) NAND Flash SSD at 512 GBytes.

In addition, the BON Series SATA II SLC SSDs are also available in data capacities of 32 GBytes, 64 GBytes and 128 GBytes. All the drives are packaged in 2.5 inch form factor, ruggedised metal casings measuring 9.5mm high for all the drives except the 256 GByte drive which measures 15.3mm high.

Ideally suited to embedded industrial, transportation, military and aerospace applications, the BON Series SATA II SSDs support Fast Erase of media data either by hardware trigger or by software ATA vendor code command across the entire range. Drives also supporting hardware and software triggered Secure Erase, particularly useful for military applications, will be available later in 2010.

The internal dual control RAID-0 design of the BON Series SATA II SSDs helps deliver their high performance, providing a maximum sequential read capability of 240 MBytes/sec with an average access time of 0.1ms and a maximum sequential write capability of 190 MBytes/sec. The BON Series SATA II SSDs are fully compliant with both the SATA 1.0a and 2.6 specifications supporting the required data throughput rates of 1.5 Gbits/sec and 3 Gbits/sec. The drives weigh just 115g.

The BON Series SATA II SSDs provide an extended operational temperature range of -40ºC to +85ºC, vibration, shock and humidity compliance to MIL-STD-810F environmental specifications and are capable of operating up to an altitude of 70,000 feet. In addition, they provide a mean time between failure (MTBF) in excess of 3 million hours, endurance performance greater than 2 million cycles with data retention of 10 years or more.
